Voice of Reason

Compatriots, we must hold our tongues no longer. The time has come to speak out and be heard, to take our destiny in our own hands. We must demand of our leaders; good governance and most importantly, we must demand accountability.

The recent happenings in the Nigerian nation have been course of concern. The political quagmire occasioned by the absence of the president of the federation for 72 day, brought dark and ominous clouds over our skies. As stipulated by section 145 of the 1999 constitution; the president is mandated to send a note to the National assembly notifying it of his intended absence. The assembly is then to authorize the said vacation and immediately facilitate the transfer of all presidential and executive powers to the vice president.

However, in the great Nigerian debacle, all parties involved feigned ignorance to the constitutional stipulations. Granted the 1999 constitution is riddled with imperfections and was forced on us by a military regime, in the absence of an alternative it the final authority in Nigeria. We must not choose to obey some sections while blatantly disregarding others.

I would like to commend the efforts of those well meaning Nigerians, who in these trying times have stood on the side of reason, morality and common sense. We the people have taken note of your bravery and your refusal to bow to the powers that be. I must also commend the Nigerian people for seeing through the fictitious North-South divide, and the Nigerian military for remaining neutral and staying distant from politics. At this stage of our democracy we cannot afford a power vacuum. Nigerians deserve to know who is truly in charge, no matter how ineffective that person may be. We deserve to know who is responsible for our sustained woes.

We dare to hope, that this president will listen to the cries of the Nigerian people. We dare to dream, that he would answer the call of the Nigerian masses, resolve the conflicts in the Niger Delta, and create the situations necessary for a thriving economy to grow.

We may only be dreamers, but hope is free, and hope is all we have!!!
